Field Manager John Massarelli is entering his fourth season with the Crushers. In 2009, he successfully led his squad to a 57-38 regular season record and ultimately, the Frontier League Championship. John’s resume includes four successful years in the Frontier League as the field manager for the Washington Wild Things (2004-07), as well as five seasons (1999-03) managing in the Houston Astros Minor League System, making stops in the New York Penn League, the Class A Midwest League and the Carolina League. Prior to his coaching career, Massarelli was a standout catcher/outfielder at the University of Akron and later went on to play ten seasons in the Minor Leagues, including five at the AAA level. In 2010, John was enshrined in the University of Akron Sports Hall of Fame. John currently resides in Massillon, OH with his wife and daughter and is looking forward to the short commute to the new ballpark in Avon. He also owns and operates Massarelli Baseball School in Akron, OH. As the Field Manager for the Lake Erie Crushers, Massarelli is responsible for scouting and signing players as well as overseeing all baseball operations.
