Crushers Infield Back for 2010

Avon, OH - The Crushers are pleased to announce the return of shortstop Jodam Rivera and pitcher Cardoza Tucker for the 2010 season. With Rivera’s new contract, the Crushers have now returned all four infield position players from the 2009 Frontier League Championship squad. Rivera will be re-joining first baseman Eddie Tisdale, second baseman Drew Saylor and third baseman Andrew Davis around the diamond as one of the toughest defensive units in the league.

Rivera was one of the very first players signed by the Crushers last season. The Puerto Rican native, played five seasons with the San Diego Padres organization before coming to Avon. Last season for the Crushers, he batted .255 in 93 games played. He recorded 70 runs, 94 hits and 36 RBI. Twenty-six of those hits were for extra bases and he was 4th in the league in triples with six.

“Rivera is the best shortstop in the league,” said Field Manager John Massarelli. “He solidifies our defense and gives us a real chance to repeat as champions.”

On the mound, the Crushers are also pleased to announce the re-signing of RHP Cardoza Tucker. Tucker started eight games for the Crushers last season, including Game 5 of the Frontier League Championship. In eight appearances on the mound, he posted four wins, no losses and an ERA of 2.63. In 51.1 innings he gave up only 37 hits, 15 earned runs and 22 walks while striking out 31.

“Tucker solidified our rotation last July and was one of the big reasons we stayed so consistent down the stretch,” said Massarelli. “We are counting on big innings out of him this year.”

In other transactions, the Crushers have traded pitcher JJ Pacella to the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League for infielder Lee Huggins and a player to be named later.

According to Massarelli, “The trade was necessary to open a L-2 roster spot for an offensive player. We wish J.J. the best and thank him of a great post season run last year.”

The Lake Erie Crushers, the 2009 Frontier League Champions, play ball at All Pro Freight Stadium located in Avon, OH. Beginning in 2010, All Pro Freight Stadium will also be home to the Cleveland State University baseball team.
