Early woes cost Crushers in 6-2 loss.
AVON, Ohio – The Traverse City Beach Bums plated three of their six runs in the first inning of Saturday night’s contest, as they took the second game of the series at All Pro Freight Stadium, defeating the Lake Erie Crushers, 6-2.
The loss for the Crushers (50-39) drops them a game behind both Schaumburg and Florence in the race for the Frontier League’s final playoff spot, while the victory for the Beach Bums (60-29) extends their winning streak to seven.
The Crushers were held to just a pair of runs on six hits, and have scored just three runs on 10 hits over the first two games of the series.
As they had done one night earlier, the Beach Bums established an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Paul Fagan (7-8) struggled to throw strikes all night long, and issued walks to the first two batters of the contest. Jose Vargas drove in the game’s first run on a single to center, and Kyle Colligan capped the inning with a two-run single to left.
The Crushers answered during the next half inning. Robby Kuzdale walked on four pitches to start the bottom of the first, and stole second base, before scoring on Daniel Bowman’s base hit to right.
The Beach Bums slowly added to their lead through the course of the contest, adding single runs in the third, the seventh and the eighth.
Lake Erie used the long ball to score their final run of the contest. Russ Moldenhauer started the bottom of the ninth inning with his eighth homer of the season, which smashed off the scoreboard in right center.
Traverse City’s starting pitcher Blake Whitmore (6-3) took the win, allowing just a run on three hits, and fanned two over six strong innings. Michael Devine (2) tossed the final three innings, allowing a run on three hits and fanned four to score the save. Fagan made it through 2.1 innings, and was responsible for four runs, five hits, four strikeouts and issued five free passes in a losing effort.
Moldenhauer was the only Crusher to hit safely multiple times, going 2-for-2 on the night and reached in all four plate appearances with a pair of walks and a single to go along with his homer in the ninth.
The Crushers will continue their three-game series with the Traverse City Beach Bums at All Pro Freight Stadium on Saturday night. Right hander Pat Arnold (0-0, 2.92) will start for the Crushers, and the Beach Bums will counter with right hander Jacob Clem (6-4, 3.04). The first pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PM.
