After spending two years at James Madison University and two years at Coastal Carolina University, Travis Risser began his professional career in 2007 with the Washington Wild Things of the Frontier League, appearing in 25 games with an ERA of 1.09 and six saves in 49.2 innings for now-Crushers manager John Massarelli. After his successful 2007 campaign, Risser's contract was purchased by the Tampa Bay Rays. The 6-2 righty started the 2008 season with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the low "A" New York Penn League before being promoted to the high “A” Columbus Catfish after 13 games. Combined, Risser appeared in 34 games in relief, posting a 3.14 ERA in 34 innings.

Risser joined the Crushers in 2010 and posted a 2.70 ERA going 8-4 and making the 2010 Frontier League All Star team.
