Murray Tosses Gem as Crushers Avoid Sweep
Lake Erie tops Schaumburg 3-1
AVON, OHIO. -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, got a big performance from Donny Murray to salvage the series finale against the Schaumburg Boomers on Thursday night. Getting just enough offense, the Crushers defeated the Boomers 3-1.
The Boomers evened things up in the second inning after singles by Zack Weigel and Dylan Jones. A sacrifice fly from James Keller scored Weigel and tied the game.
In the bottom of the fourth, Cody Lenahan led off with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Hurley followed with a sacrifice fly and picked up his second RBI of the game to give the Crushers a 2-1 lead.
Lake Erie starter Donny Murray (3-4) was tossing a gem on the other side for the Crushers. Murray had to work around some trouble in the third inning but was able to do so. The Boomers had the leadoff man aboard in the fourth and fifth innings but Murray kept Schaumburg from scoring again. The right-hander went 7.2 innings and allowed just the one run on six hits. He struck out three along the way. Murray threw 123 pitches in what was his best outing of the season.
Boomers starter Payton Lobdell (1-3) went seven strong innings as well. He allowed two runs on three hits in a losing effort.
Crushers reliever Louis Cohen got the last four outs for the Crushers to secure the win. He picked up his first save of the season. The victory for the Crushers snapped a six game losing streak to Schaumburg (18-17).
Lake Erie (21-15) begins a nine game road trip tomorrow night when they visit the Windy City Thunderbolts. Ethan Westphal (0-2) gets the start for the Crushers with first pitch coming at 7:05 PM.
